Basic Steps for Home Business Success

When you make the decision to earn income from the internet you will need to go through a set up process to be ready for your home business.

Some of the basic steps in setting up for home business success are:

“A” is for Attitude
The key to your home business success is having the proper attitude.

To be successful, you MUST treat your “home” business like you would any other business. After all, a home business is a “REAL” business.

There is a saying in the “Home Business” community. I think it goes something like this;
It has also been said; “You can be successful working part-time; or full-time but it is highly unlikely that you will be successful working in your "spare time".”

"If you have a hobby attitude you will have a hobby income, if you have a home business attitude you will have a home business income."

Look at it this way; if you are starting any small business, it’s most likely to give your family a more secure financial future. So keep your priorities in order and remember why you started a HB in the first place. (Your family is worth it!)

Attention also needs to be given to your “Working” environment:

You should create a space that you can call your own, free from distractions for your scheduled time. Some of the things you may need are:

    •  For example:
pens, highlighters, a good stapler, three hole punch, sticky tape, note book(s), 3 ring binders and manila folders are some of the basics you may need.

1. A comfortable chair and organized desk.
2. Stationery supplies as required.

3. At the very least, you will also need to create a “hard-copy” filing system.
4. I’m also going to recommend you get a GOOD “Laptop” computer. It is almost impossible to get by without one in today’s business environment.

NOTE:
Consider the value of a broadband connection. Your time is valuable and a broadband connection can allow you to get more done in a given time frame.

You will also want to have some sort of “work” schedule.

A "WORK" schedule is critical whether you are working part-time or full-time. It is important; you develop a schedule that works for you! Your family, your spouse and your home business depend on time spent wisely.

Allocating a specific block of time for work, helps you manage your time more efficiently. Set a work schedule and use that time for work. Equally important is to make a “LIST” of all your other commitments to family, friends, church and SELF. So, schedule your time accordingly.

During these “other” times don't work! After all if one of the reasons to work from home is to spend more time with your family then you don't want your working at home time to consume your family time.

Personal Note:
We “homeschool” our two children and my wife still works outside the home; so, family time, self education (reading, listening and viewing), "health time" (exercise, cooking and eating), and leisure time can be difficult to keep up with.

REMEMBER!
You are working for yourself! Your schedule is your "boss" and choices must be made. When you encounter interruptions (and you will), you will need to make a choice. Only you can decide what is important to you.

Keeping a couple of things in mind may help:

1. Are you committed to your own home business success?

2. What is the most important thing you REALLY need to do at the moment?

3. Do NOT be afraid to tell people you are “working”; and it’s not a good time. After all, if you interrupted someone on their 9-5 job they might not like it either.

4. Talk with your family!

You may need to negotiate with your friends, spouse and children to have your home business time agreed upon, during which you will not be interrupted.

5. Write your schedule down and prominently display it somewhere so all family members are aware of your work schedule. You also need to be able to “describe” your Home Business to people.

Write a concise and powerful one or two sentence description that someone can repeat in describing your home business to others. A unique and memorable tag line can also be invaluable for promoting your home business.

NOTE:

Perhaps the most important thing about your ability to “describe” your “Home Business” is the psychological impact it will have on “YOU”!

(Being able to describe your business helps cement the fact your “Home Business” is a BUSINESS in your own psyche.)

Stay tuned for part TWO-

In future postings we'll discuss product selection, computer skills and administrative requirements.
