What is Aromatherapy?

You might be wondering, "What is Aromatherapy?" In my experiences, aromatherapy is the therapeutic use of the bountiful supply of God's creations, the living plants and their life blood of aromatic substances, called essential oils, to enhance or improve the natural balance of the body's intricate systems.

Aromatherapy can positively affect the mental, physical, spiritual, and emotional aspects of our lives. It provides a non-invasive mode of controlling one's own health by tapping into the therapeutic properties of essential oils for gaining both physical and emotional health and well-being. The term "aromatherapy" was originally used in the 1920's by a French perfumer named Rene Gattfosse. The word therapy implies the need for treatment of an illness or disability. We would also like to encourage the use of aromatherapy for everyday pleasure and well-being.

Today, we touched on defining the term "Aromatherapy." Next time I will cover essential oils and explain their natural place in the scheme of life. Later, I will cover how our sense of smell works. Through the weeks ahead, I will take you on a journey of discovery and study of individual essential oils, their history, physical properties, and their safe and effective therapeutic uses.
